About nangka.org

In summary:
Nangka.org was originally registered to provide a slightly more personal email domain, but since it included some webhosting service, why not use it for other stuff as well.

Over time, I started to put my short travels on the site. Mostly pictures that are scaled to fit onto the small columns that this site allows, since I find it easier than using the gallery page. And with the added bonus of being able to include some short essay as well.

In a typical short trip, I’ll travel with a medium pack of camera gear, GPS, and my Nokia E61 phone. The E61 makes it easier to type out blog entries as it happens. At the end of the trip, I’ll send the email to my site and it gets parsed automatically into a blog entry. This might be a little crude since I have not figured out how to solve the line break display issue once published, but no problems there since I will still need to get home, load and sort all the pictures and edit them for upload to the site. Call this post processing. So don’t be surprised if you see a raw post with no photos, and then refinements a week later.

I guess I should do a summary page here to list out the URLs of the locations I have been to, which is easier than you having to scroll thru the category!

Notes:- Posts are categorized according to their high level subject. I try to include subjects and categories that are very high level so that I can combine my previous multiple blogs in Movable Type into just 1 blog in the current system. This simplifies the website a lot.

Emailing me:

- I have been thinking about putting my email address on this website, but knowing how spam crawlers are trolling the web for email addresses, I’m sure once I do this my main mailbox will start to be filled up with pen*s enlargement and stock recommendation mails. So, not planning to include my email at all.

- Here’s a trick. Post a comment, and I’ll see it when its being moderated, in effect its like emailing me! Maybe I’ll contact you by email and that way you have my email address. Simple init?

    Brian,

We are interested in using one of your photos for the cover of an academic book called The Quran: A New Annotated Translation by AJ Droge and Umair Khan. The two we are considering are Blue Mosque in Turkey F00768Image0008.jpg or Rustim Mosque in Turkey 1012896.jpg.

Can you let me know if this is possible in principle and what you would charge?

    Thanks and best wishes

    Hi,
fascinating travels. Just curious as to what is the nature of your job? You seem to get to travel all the time!

Its amazing what you can find in your backyard, if you take the time to get lost and explore. My daytime job is not glamorous at all!

I am curious, where did you find those compartmented boxes to hold film? I have been looking for just that kind of box.

    Thank you, –Dan Barnes

    Hi Brian

I came across your site and your great posts on Changxing and Hengsha when researching those islands for an article for Shanghai Talk on boat trips out of Shanghai (for the May 2012 edition). I was hoping we might get permission to use some of your photos from the islands to go in the article? You would of course be credited in whichever way you prefer (name/website/both).

Please let me know what you think.

    Kind regards

    Aimee
